Dental implants are made of titanium, one of the most widely used metals in dentistry and medicine today. Since scientific studies have proven its high degree of biocompatibility and bone osseointegration, it has become the most suitable material for the development and design of dental implants.
But, before continuing to explain the composition of dental implants, what is titanium? And who discovered its usefulness for dental implantology? In 1982 the Swedish orthopedic surgeon and research professor, Per-Ingvar Branemark, conducted scientific studies on the biocompatibility that titanium would have in dental implants.
Titanium, a metal similar in color to steel but much lighter, more moldable and firmer, during Dr. Branemark’s studies, demonstrated great long-term success in biocompatibility, resistance to corrosion within the oral cavity, and high properties related to osseointegration.
It should be clarified that when we talk about biocompatibility we refer to the fact that the human body easily accepts titanium, rejecting it on a few occasions. On the other hand, when a dental implant adapts to the oral cavity and fulfills its function without inconvenience, we will refer to osseointegration.
More than 95% of dental implants today are manufactured, designed and marketed with titanium as the main element.

Zirconium: a new non-metallic material for dental implants
Scientific progress in recent years has unveiled a new material to be used in dental implantology, zirconium. This in order to eliminate metals and increase aesthetics oriented to naturalness.
Zirconium is a mineral with a high degree of resistance and biointegration, used not only for the composition of implants but also for the manufacture of dental prostheses.
It stands out for its high durability, biointegration with oral tissues, resistance to corrosion in humidity and impediment to the formation of bacterial plaque on the implant.
More studies are still needed to verify the validity and safety of zirconium implants compared to titanium dental implants, therefore, titanium continues to be the main alternative for dental professionals.
Dental implant surgery is a procedure with a success rate of more than 95%. It is performed under local anesthesia and, unlike what it may seem, it is a comfortable and painless procedure.
Scientifically it has been shown that titanium not only binds to bone physically but also chemically, creating a solid structure on which the new dental prosthesis similar to the natural tooth will then be placed.
At Doctor Juan we are creators of high quality smiles, for this reason we only work with quality materials. Titanium implants prevent breakage problems, bone infections that can affect oral health, an immune reaction against the material used, which makes it impossible to properly heal and connect the implant or screw with the bone.
In addition, we work with recognized brands that comply with strict international health standards, which guarantees the safety and effectiveness of our implants, guaranteeing the success of the treatment and its long-term results.
How much do dental implants cost in Medellín?
The price of dental implants varies according to the patient’s oral health status and the number of implants required. The cost of a dental implant ranges from $800 to $2.520 USD.
The great advantage that dental implants offer is their durability of between 15 to 25 years, although if the necessary care is not taken, they will have a short useful life. To keep the implants in perfect condition, it is essential to maintain proper dental hygiene and attend regular medical check-ups.
